Can you make a tie blanket with fabric besides fleece?

I want to make a blanket for my boyfriend before he goes to college, and it seems like a tie blanket is the easiest thing to do. But does the tie blanket work with other types of fabric? And to make the blanket extra warm, can I put something in between the two layers of fabric? Thank you!
